The Art of Letting Go
Ebru Karayiğit is a watercolor artist whose work explores atmosphere, memory, and the beauty found in everyday places. Drawing inspiration from her travels, nature, architecture, and ordinary moments of daily life, she is particularly drawn to landscapes, light and architecture of her native Türkiye—a sunlit wall, laundry moving in the air, a distant shoreline, or shifting shapes of trees and shadows. Living between cultures has shaped the way she observes and remembers places, often translating these impressions into paintings that move between direct experience and memory.
At the heart of Ebru’s practice is watercolor itself. Working primarily with wet-into-wet techniques, she embraces the medium’s fluidity and unpredictability, allowing pigment and water to move and interact freely. Rather than describing every detail, she seeks a balance between suggestion and definition, spontaneity and intention. Color remains an important part of her visual language, ranging from rich expressive passages to quiet, limited palettes.
For Ebru, watercolor is ultimately an exercise in letting go. The medium requires patience, trust, and a willingness to respond rather than control—an approach that shapes both her artistic process and her broader philosophy of life.
Ebru is an associate member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society (BWS), an exhibiting artist member of The Art League in Alexandria, Virginia, and a member of the Capitol Hill Art League (CHAL) in Washington, DC. Her work has been exhibited throughout the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia region.
